Teams that Should Copy the Sixers

The Philadelphia 76ers unveiled their new logo today.  I really like it…except it’s not new.

The Sixers are changing their logo and color scheme back to what they used from 1977 to 1998.  I find this very refreshing.  Granted, there are a lot of ugly logos and colors from the past.  But there are too many teams over the last handful of years that have changed logos and colors in an attempt to distance themselves from an legacy of failure.

An extreme example of this is the the Tampa Bay Rays.  Not only did they change logos, but they changed names too.  Previously the Devil Rays, they dropped the Devil in hopes that they would escape the standing’s basement for the first time in their history.  And it worked.  They went from worst to first in their division and won the American League Pennant.  Seeing success like this is sure to lead more and more teams to change logos, colors, and/or names.

Considering the number of ugly logos out there in the sports world, teams might want to look to their past for inspiration, rather than running away from it.  Here’s a few teams that should ditch their current rags, and stop by a thrift shop to find their old uniforms.

  • Houston Rockets - The new logo isn’t that much newer than the old one, but how can you not like a logo with an angry looking, phallic-shaped rocket?

  • Golden State Warriors - Why does the current logo have The Phantom carrying a the team’s name attached to a lightning bolt?  The old one is straight to the point…and hence, better.

  • New England Patriots - Why did so many newer logos have to go abstract?  What’s wrong with a center who looks like he can handle a musket?

  • Toronto Blue Jays - Eventhough the old logo was the one responsible for one of my earliest, most heart-breaking Philly losses, it’s a really nice logo.

  • Anaheim (Mighty) Ducks - The original Mighty Ducks logo is awesome.  The new one sucks.  End of argument.

  • Pittsburgh Penguins - Granted, the new one is a variation on an older jersey/logo.  But that logo of the ’90s was, and still is, awesome.

  1. I can’t help but agree with your sentiment, many of these classic logos deserve to be appreciated and not discarded, especially when you recognize that they are creating such meaningful icons without abusing photoshop/illustrator design tools like gradients.

The one place I disagree is the Patriots new logo, it took something that was too mired in minute details, and made it more iconic, symbolic and evocative of the ideals associated with the name Patriots. That one, I like.

Its actually the same problem with the Penguins, although they moved in the wrong direction.
